AI-based plantation land mapping — tree census, crop health, and traceability
Indonesian sawit
GEOAI turns drone data and satellite imagery into operational insight: automated AI-based oil-palm tree census, early crop-health detection, and EUDR/ISPO traceability support for Indonesian plantations.
REGULATORY LANDSCAPE
Sustainability, traceability, and governance — all at once.
Indonesia’s palm oil industry contributes over half of global supply — operating at a scale that now meets some of the world’s strictest sustainability and traceability demands. The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requires every shipment to be traceable to a land plot, with historical satellite evidence of no deforestation since December 2020.
Layered on top: RSPO recertification, mandatory ISPO compliance, OJK POJK 51/2017 sustainable-finance reporting for listed holdings, and growing public, regulator, and civil-society scrutiny of land governance — HGU transparency, land-use change, and concession management.
These obligations land on operations spanning hundreds of thousands of hectares, where manual survey is slow, costly, and inconsistent. Indonesian plantation enterprises need a solution built for that reality — geospatial intelligence that turns existing drone and satellite data into evidence and decisions. That is what DTI’s GEOAI delivers.
PLANTATION & AGRIBUSINESS CHALLENGES
Where teams in this industry need depth
Four areas where Plantation & Agribusiness teams most often need specialist technology that meets regulator expectations without disrupting operations.
Scale vs. limited manpower
Hundreds of thousands of hectares supervised manually — slow, costly, and inconsistent. Limited field teams cannot cover the land at the cadence decisions require.
Reactive decisions, non-uniform data
Field data is rarely uniform across estates or real-time, so problems — Ganoderma, crop stress, yield loss — are detected only after the impact is already underway.
EUDR & sustainability evidence
RSPO, ISPO, and EUDR demand precise, satellite-verified land traceability — impractical to assemble manually across estate-scale operations.
Land governance & asset transparency
Public, regulator, and civil-society scrutiny of land-use change and HGU — alongside asset risks like encroachment — calls for a defensible, audit-ready geospatial evidence trail.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is GEOAI and how is it used for plantation land mapping?
GEOAI combines computer vision, geographic information systems (GIS), and satellite or drone imagery to analyze land conditions automatically. It is used for tree census, land-cover area estimation, and change detection over time, without requiring a full manual survey of every hectare. DTI developed GEOAI as a proprietary product for plantation and agribusiness needs.
How does GEOAI help plantations comply with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)?
The EUDR (Regulation (EU) 2023/1115) requires commodities such as palm oil entering the EU market to be traceable to a plot-level geolocation and proven deforestation-free after 31 December 2020. GEOAI analyzes historical satellite imagery to verify land-cover status at that cutoff date, supporting the due-diligence documentation EUDR requires.
What’s the difference between RSPO and ISPO certification, and how does geospatial technology support the certification process?
RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) is a voluntary international certification scheme, while ISPO (Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil) is a mandatory Indonesian government certification governed by Presidential Regulation No. 44 of 2020. Both require evidence of land legality and sustainable management, including accurate plantation boundary and land-cover data. GEOAI provides the geospatial data needed to support documentation for both schemes.
How does GEOAI help detect Ganoderma disease outbreaks in oil palm plantations?
Ganoderma (basal stem rot) is difficult to detect early through manual visual inspection because symptoms only become visible once infection has progressed. GEOAI analyzes multispectral imagery to identify vegetation-stress patterns that can indicate early-stage infection, letting plantation teams prioritize areas for verification and mitigation faster than routine full-field inspections allow.
Does GEOAI fully replace the need for ground surveys on plantations?
No. GEOAI speeds up and extends the scope of large-scale land analysis, but ground-truthing remains necessary to validate model results and to meet audit requirements under schemes such as RSPO, ISPO, and EUDR. GEOAI reduces the area that needs a full manual survey rather than eliminating field verification altogether.
