DATA SANITIZATION — IT ASSET DISPOSAL

IT asset disposal starts with data that is truly gone

Retired laptops, servers, storage, and ATMs are usually resold, donated, or handed to a recycler. Before those assets leave your organization, DTI makes sure their data is destroyed with the right method and issues a destruction certificate per serial number, at your site, anywhere in Indonesia.

NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2UU PDP (Law 27/2022) Articles 43–44ISO/IEC 27001:2022 Annex A 7.14 & 8.10POJK 11/POJK.03/2022

IT asset disposal (ITAD) is the process of ending the life of IT equipment safely: recording the asset, destroying its data, then reselling, donating, or recycling the device. Of all those steps, data destruction is the only one that carries legal risk. A device sold with its data still on it is a personal-data incident waiting to happen.

Many recyclers and second-hand buyers offer 'data wiping' as a bonus, without explaining the method or providing evidence per serial number. For organizations supervised by OJK or the Ministry of Health, or audited against ISO 27001, that is not enough. What is needed is a NIST SP 800-88 method and documents an auditor can review.

DTI focuses on that part. We destroy the data before the assets go to whichever buyer or recycler you choose, so decisions on asset value stay with you while the data risk is closed at your site.

Where IT asset disposal usually leaks

Data sold along with the device

Used laptops and servers are often sold after only a format. The data can still be recovered by the next owner with ordinary recovery software.

Vendor wiping without evidence

A recycler or asset buyer says the data 'has been wiped', but there is no serial-number list, method, or witness an auditor can check.

Assets leave the building before the data is gone

Devices are trucked to a vendor's warehouse with data intact. In transit and in storage, you no longer control the customer or employee data on them.

SSDs treated like hard drives

Modern laptops use SSDs. Degaussing does not erase SSDs, so a process that relies only on a degausser leaves data on the devices most often resold.

Data destruction as the first step of ITAD

Asset and media inventory

Every device and its storage media are recorded by serial number before processing, so the count going in matches the count destroyed.

Method matched to the media

Degaussing and physical destruction for hard drives and tape; verified crypto-erase or physical destruction for SSDs, per NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 and IEEE 2883.

Done at your site

For the most sensitive assets, destruction happens on-site so media never leaves the building before its data is gone.

Destruction certificate per serial number

The evidence lists media, method, date, location, witnesses, and signatures, ready for internal audit, ISO 27001, and regulatory examination.

Assets ready to hand over

Once the data is gone, devices with remaining value can be sold or donated, and the rest handed to the recycler of your choice, with no data going along.

DTI's Data Sanitization service is used by banks and companies in Indonesia to destroy data before IT assets are retired, with service across Indonesia.

An ITAD flow with DTI data destruction

1

Registration

We record the assets and media being retired together with your IT and asset-management teams.

2

Method plan

The method is set per media type and data sensitivity, including devices to be resold intact.

3

Witnessed destruction

Destruction happens at your site or at the destruction facility, witnessed by your representatives.

4

Handover and evidence

You receive a destruction certificate per serial number, then the assets go to the buyer or recycler of your choice.

Questions about IT asset disposal

What is IT asset disposal (ITAD)?

ITAD is the process of ending the life of IT equipment safely and on record: asset inventory, data destruction, then resale, donation, or recycling of the device. The part that carries legal risk is the data destruction.

Does DTI buy back or recycle IT assets?

DTI focuses on data destruction and its evidence. Once the data is destroyed, you are free to hand the assets to the buyer or recycler of your choice. We can coordinate with that vendor so the handover is recorded.

Can laptops be resold after their data is destroyed?

Yes, if the method preserves the device, such as a verified crypto-erase on an SSD or a verified overwrite. If the drive is shredded or degaussed, the device can still be sold without the drive or with a replacement drive.

What evidence do we receive?

A destruction certificate per serial number listing media type, method, date, location, witnesses, and signatures. It serves as evidence for ISO 27001 audits, regulatory examinations, and internal retention policy.

Can destruction be done at our site?

Yes. For sensitive assets we recommend on-site destruction, so media does not leave the building before its data is gone. The service is available across Indonesia.

What about SSDs in laptops and servers?

SSDs cannot be degaussed. They are destroyed with a verified crypto-erase or shredded with an SSD-rated shredder, depending on whether the device will be resold and how sensitive the data is.
