DATA SANITIZATION — BUYER'S GUIDE

Choosing a degausser or hard drive shredder in Indonesia

Degaussers, destroyers, and shredders solve different problems. This guide helps IT and security teams in Indonesia match the machine to their media, volume, and assurance level, and decide whether buying a machine makes more sense than an on-site service. DTI supplies machines from Proton, SEM, CrushBox, Kobra, and Mega, with delivery across Indonesia.

Most buying mistakes come from one assumption: that a degausser handles every drive. It does not. A degausser erases magnetic media, meaning hard disk drives and tapes. SSDs, USB drives, and memory cards store data electronically and are untouched by a magnetic field. An organization with a mixed fleet of laptops and servers almost always needs more than one method.

The second mistake is sizing. A machine rated for a few hundred drives per hour is wasted on a branch office that retires twenty drives a year, while a data center decommissioning racks of storage will outgrow a desktop destroyer in a week.

The sections below walk through the three machine types, the specifications that matter, and the point at which a service is the better buy.

Where machine purchases go wrong

Buying a degausser for an SSD fleet

Laptops and newer servers run on SSDs. A degausser leaves their data intact, so an organization that bought only a degausser still has an unsolved problem for most of its retired devices.

Oversizing or undersizing throughput

Throughput ranges from one drive every 10 to 15 seconds on a compact destroyer to hundreds of drives per hour on an industrial shredder. The right machine follows your annual volume, not the largest number on a datasheet.

Ignoring particle size for SSDs

Shredding an SSD into large pieces can leave memory chips intact. SSD-rated shredders cut to a much smaller particle size so no chip survives whole.

No evidence process around the machine

A machine destroys media; it does not produce audit evidence by itself. Without an inventory by serial number and a signed destruction record, auditors have nothing to review.

Three machine types, three jobs

Degausser: magnetic HDDs and tapes

Applies a strong magnetic field that erases the platters or tape and the servo tracks the drive needs to run. Fast at volume: the Proton T-1.5 runs at 1.5 tesla and handles around 1,200 3.5-inch drives per hour. Not for SSDs.

Destroyer: compact physical destruction of HDDs

Bends or punctures the platters so the drive cannot be read. The CrushBox DB-60Pro-E takes 10 to 15 seconds per drive and fits a desk or on-site workflow. Often paired with a degausser for higher assurance.

HDD shredder: bulk destruction

Cuts drives into particles. SEM's Model 0300 handles up to 500 drives per hour, and SEM models are listed on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List. Suited to data centers and central IT.

SSD and combo shredders: flash media

SSD-rated shredders cut to small particles so memory chips do not survive: the Proton PDS-88 handles 75 to 80 SSDs per hour, and the Kobra disintegrator reduces SSDs and flash to sand-like particles. Combo units such as the SEM Model 0315 take both HDDs and SSDs.

When a service beats buying

If you destroy media only a few times a year, an on-site service avoids the purchase, operation, and maintenance of a machine. DTI provides both, so the recommendation follows your volume.

DTI supplies data sanitization machines and on-site destruction services to banks and companies in Indonesia, with delivery and service across the country.

How DTI helps you choose

1

Profile your media

Share your mix of HDDs, SSDs, and tapes, your annual volume, and where destruction needs to happen.

2

Match method and machine

We map each media type to a method under NIST SP 800-88 and shortlist machines that fit your throughput and assurance level.

3

Compare buy versus service

You receive a quote for the machine and, where it makes sense, the cost of an on-site service for the same volume.

4

Delivery and evidence process

Machines are delivered across Indonesia, and we help set up the inventory and destruction record your auditors will ask for.

Questions about buying a degausser or shredder

Where can I buy a degausser in Indonesia?

DTI supplies degaussers, destroyers, and HDD/SSD shredders from Proton, SEM, CrushBox, Kobra, and Mega, with delivery across Indonesia. Request a quote with your media mix and volume, and we will recommend a model.

Does a degausser work on SSDs?

No. SSDs store data electronically, not magnetically, so a degausser does not erase them. Use an SSD-rated shredder or a verified cryptographic erase.

What drives the price of a degausser or shredder?

Throughput per hour, supported media (HDD, tape, SSD), particle size for shredders, automation such as conveyor drawers, and certifications such as NSA/CSS EPL listing. DTI quotes against your actual volume rather than a list price.

Is a machine compliant with NIST SP 800-88?

NIST SP 800-88 defines sanitization levels, Clear, Purge, and Destroy; it does not certify brands. Degaussing magnetic media is Purge, and shredding or disintegration is Destroy. Compliance comes from using the right method per media and documenting it.

Should we buy a machine or use a service?

Buy when destruction is frequent and high-volume, such as a bank with many branches or a data center. Use an on-site service when it happens a few times a year. DTI offers both, so the advice is not tied to selling one or the other.
